About Us

Hare & Hosta offers a coaching service that educates and equips you to garden on your own. Our passion is getting people to love gardening as much as we do; that's how we measure our success. We value authentic, warm connection because we've seen how much knowledge people can soak up when sessions are personalized every time.

Owner Sarah-Mary Gerchman has a broad background in horticulture and agriculture. She attended an agricultural high school where she first worked in a greenhouse at 15. She spent two summers on a small produce farm where she planted, harvested, and ate every greenhouse tomato she could get her hands on. Next, she managed a boutique gardening center, where she bought and cared for the store's annuals, veggie and herb starts, temperennials, and houseplants. After transitioning to a wholesale grower, she helmed perennial production, growing over 450 unique perennial crops, as well as hundreds of thousands of annuals, vegetable and herb starts. Most recently, she was a project manager restoring and repairing high-end research and teaching greenhouses across America. Throughout her professional career, she has dug into her own yard to gain the experience of a backyard gardener. She owns far too many houseplants.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is there an advantage to Hare & Hosta over other garden coaches I can find online?
Garden coaching offers a lifeline between Googling across scores of websites and handing over control to an expensive, full-service landscaping company. An experienced, knowledgeable garden coach like Hare & Hosta acts as a guide, saving you time, money, and frustration. Reach out any time, we can't wait to hear from you. hello@hareandhosta.com
  • Can a Hare & Hosta garden coach save me money?
Yes! From our pre-meeting questionnaire to our one-on-one meetings to our post-meeting information packet, we'll be with you every step of the way. Our goal is for you to reach yours. We equip you with the knowledge you'll need to complete the projects you have in mind. No false starts, no wasteful purchases, and armed with tried and true methods to ensure your success. Although we believe valuable lessons can accompany a failure, we'd rather fast-track you to success. A Hare & Hostra garden coach will save you money by getting it right the first time.
  • How many times should we meet?
It's up to you! For smaller projects and questions, a single coaching session may get you on your way. Most clients prefer to have follow-up sessions as the season progresses and their challenges change. We offer a reduced rate for repeat sessions within the same season to make it easier for you to check-in.
  • Do you only work with beginners?
Nope. Hare & Hosta loves growing alongside you. We’re equipped to work with more experienced gardeners, too. Let’s talk pruning techniques, plant pathology, garden design, or whatever else you have in mind.
  • Can I get this kind of coaching at a gardening center?
Here in Cincinnati, we are fortunate to have several independent gardening centers with great selection and staff. However, their staff never sees your yard, can't work alongside you, and they don't have the time to help the way a coach can. Hare & Hosta gives you one-on-one attention. Our personalized experience will set you up for success, because we’re not just gardeners, we’re educators. We craft our sessions to be as informative and as educational as possible. We're hands-on; we love working alongside you and demonstrating as-we-go.
  • What are some benefits of gardening? Why not just pay a landscaper?
Good landscaping is more than nice on the eyes. It can drastically alter curb appeal and raise property values. Food grown at home is more densely nutritious and flavorful than grocery store produce. Even a single annual container can provide a stop for pollinators and a habitat for bugs. Gardening provides exercise, has meditative qualities and can bring you to a state of "flow.” It stretches your brain and your muscles, and nourishes your belly and soul. Gardening is good for your mental health. It's a joy to see customers learn and have fun doing something they've never tried or been frustrated with before. We want our sessions to tap into that feeling: gardening is a good time.
