Garden Coaching

We're not just gardeners, we're educators. We want our sessions to be as informative and as educational as possible. Hare & Hosta is hands-on; we love working alongside you and demonstrating as-we-go. If you've never gardened in your life, we'll bring items like tools and plants for show-and-tell. We specialize in coaching gardeners with the following:

Vegetable Gardening: According to the National Gardening Association in 2021, just over a third of Americans have a vegetable garden, and that number is growing. Gardeners see a real financial return on a successful vegetable garden, and kids are more willing to eat food they've grown. Hare & Hosta celebrates heirloom varieties, locally grown food, and organic gardening practices. We believe even a small victory garden can have a wonderful impact on a community of neighbors. Hare & Hosta can advise on placement, orientation, materials, crop selection and location. Or, mid-garden and things going sideways? We can help troubleshoot and get you back on track. Gardening is an adventure in learning, and we can fast track you.

Herb gardens: We can help you design and plant a culinary or medicinal herb garden. Herbs thrive in containers, and are the perfect plants for beginners. Many are forgiving growers, and can be continually harvested, providing a great return on your efforts.

Perennials and Shrubs: Our owner used to grow perennials professionally, and she stands by these trusted garden additions. As opposed to annuals, which must be planted year after year, perennials return after winter, getting bigger and better every year. Good shrub and perennial placement can transform your "foundation planting," a term for the strip of yard in front of your house, into something spectacular. We love talking good design fundamentals, and can also help you include more native plants. You only get one shot at planting perennials, so an understanding of soil structure, amendments, and preparation is a must.

Houseplants: Apartment and condo-dwellers rejoice! There are so many tropical plants that thrive in our homes. From a single window to an indoor jungle, we can help with plant selection, care instructions, and pest ID and control.

Custom Containers

We build beautiful, seasonal containers for both residential and commercial clients. Container gardening packs a large punch in a small space; each season brings different combinations of plants to enjoy. We particularly like mixing vegetables with flowers for an unexpected combination. When designing a container, Hare & Hosta takes into account the location and surrounding architecture, your particular style and maintenance preference, and a keen understanding of color, texture, and scale. We work in pots either belonging to you or acquired through us.

Turnkey Installations for Vegetable & Herb Gardens

Hare & Hosta will install a vegetable or herb garden for your family! For herbs, we prefer using stainless-steel cattle troughs that we modify for plant use. They last forever and look great. There's nothing like running out, mid-dinner prep, to snip a few fresh sage leaves, or to dip bread into olive oil infused with your own rosemary. Herbs are some of the easiest plants to grow, and can be continuously harvested. We like intermingling leafy herbs with edible flowers, such as marigolds and nasturtiums.

A kitchen garden tends to be a bit smaller than a regular vegetable garden. Instead of a large dirt plot somewhere, a kitchen garden is closer to the house for ease-of-access, more aesthetically pleasing, as well as an elegant, natural combination of culinary and medicinal herbs, flowers, and vegetables. They pack a lot into a small space! Hare & Hosta takes a great deal into consideration when designing and installing a kitchen garden for you. This will be size, location, orientation, ease of maintenance, and plant selection and placement. We use raised beds or planters for several reasons, including soil control, better pest and weed prevention, warmer soil temperature, and aesthetics.

We'll ask you lots of questions about what your family does and doesn't like to eat, and what things you've always wanted to grow. We'll ask how you've maintained a vegetable garden in the past, and what has led to success, and what you don't want to repeat. We'll start some crops by seed, others by "starts," small plants ready to be transplanted. A small kitchen garden is the perfect way to begin growing your own food, and Hare & Hosta will deliver a fully installed garden for you and your family.
